Established in 1945 and located in Seocho-gu, Seoul, the National Library of Korea is South Korea’s only national comprehensive library with dual functions of a national document collection center and a public cultural service institution. Consisting of the main building, professional branch libraries, digital library and supporting facilities, it is open to all Korean citizens for free. It is committed to systematically collecting, sorting and preserving various domestic and foreign documents and inheriting South Korea’s intellectual and cultural heritage. It also undertakes the formulation of national book numbering standards and the compilation of national bibliographies. With a collection of over ten million volumes and a complete digital document database, it provides public welfare services such as document reading, academic retrieval, cultural lectures and digital resource sharing, serving as a core hub for knowledge reserve, academic research and public cultural communication in South Korea.
