The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD for short) of Nepal is the core functional department of the Nepalese government responsible for overall planning, management and promotion of the development of agriculture and livestock throughout the country. As a pillar sector of the national economy, agriculture and animal husbandry support the livelihood needs of approximately 60% of Nepal's population. The work of this sector is directly related to national food security, rural economic growth, poverty alleviation and ecological sustainable development, and holds an important strategic position in the governance system of the Nepalese government.
The main functions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development of Nepal
- Policy formulation and planning: Take the lead in formulating medium and long-term development plans, industrial policies and technical standards for agriculture and animal husbandry in line with the national development strategy, clarify the development direction, key areas and safeguard measures of the industry, and promote the standardized and modernized development of the industry.
- Technology research and development and promotion: Integrate resources from scientific research institutions to carry out technology research and development in areas such as crop planting, livestock and poultry breeding, pest and disease control, and high-quality seed breeding. By establishing a grassroots technology promotion system, advanced and applicable technologies will be popularized among farmers to enhance production efficiency.
- Resource guarantee and services: Coordinate and implement the supply and supervision of agricultural production materials (such as seeds, fertilizers, veterinary drugs, etc.) to ensure production demands; At the same time, it provides practitioners with all-round services such as market information, skills training, and financial support connection to reduce the risks of production and operation.
- Industrial chain cultivation and upgrading: Promote the extension of agriculture and animal husbandry from the production stage to downstream links such as processing, storage, logistics, and sales, cultivate agricultural product processing enterprises and cooperative organizations, increase product added value, and enhance industrial competitiveness.
Ecological protection and sustainable development: In light of the ecological characteristics of Nepal's mountainous areas, promote ecological agriculture and circular breeding models, strengthen the control of agricultural non-point source pollution and the protection of biodiversity, and achieve the coordinated unity of industrial development and ecological protection.
- Disaster response and risk prevention and control: Establish a monitoring, early warning and emergency response mechanism for agricultural natural disasters (such as floods, droughts, hail) and animal and plant diseases, formulate prevention and control plans, and reduce the impact of disasters on industries.
